Wallasea Island RSPB

The ambitious project to create Europe's largest man-made coastal nature reserve in Essex has been followed by SWLA artists since 2012. In the summer of 2017 it was my turn to spend a few days there documenting the abundant wildlife. Here is a selection of fieldwork from those few days.

Above: Looking over the scrapes from the seawall.

Above: Wallasea is now home to a busy colony of Avocets.

Above: Mediterranean Gulls also breed amongst the more numerous Black-headed Gulls.

Above: Corn Buntings are common at Wallasea and it was a pleasure to hear their jangling song.

Above: Common Seals hauled out on the mud.
